Rooibos tea originated in southern Africa. The indigenous peoples used the rooibos shrub to produce a fruity, sweet tea long before the Europeans. Branches of the shrub are dried in the sun and then crushed. The export of the tea to distant lands began at the beginning of the 19th century and has continued to expand to this day. This resulted in the cultivation of what was once a wild-growing shrub. High-quality rooibos tea can be recognized by its ruby-red color and its soft, sweet, and typically aromatic flavor. The leaves tend to have long needles.
